Memorial Day 2020

Dear American Legion Family Members and Friends,

Memorial Day, for most of us, will be different this year. The meaning, however, does not change.

I’m calling on The American Legion Family to encourage communities far and wide to pay tribute to our nation’s fallen heroes at dusk May 25, Memorial Day, by lighting candles of honor and placing them on front porches. Such a display will remind everyone that our resolve to honor those who served before us will continue even as social-distancing measures limit our ability to perform traditional Memorial Day remembrances.

We must adapt and overcome the pandemic in order to pay our respects to the true meaning of Memorial Day.

The manner and placement of the candles of honor are up to each individual. If possible, I recommend using a front porch as a visible reminder of the price that was paid for freedom.

Color options for consideration could include: A red candle to remember the blood shed in battle for the protection of our freedoms. A white candle to keep our POWs/MIAs ever in our thoughts and prayers as we await their return home A blue candle to salute the memories of those who made it home but are no longer with us. However you choose, whether it’s one candle or three, I ask that photos of those candles be shared on social media, tagging The American Legion National Headquarters and using the hashtag #candlesofhonor so our message will reach families everywhere. An additional option is to show your gratitude by having each member of a family or group hold up a sign spelling out a message of Memorial Day. WE SHALL NEVER FORGET would be a good choice.

Also, this year, remember our Virtual Memorial Day page on legion.org/legiontown. Please share with our national audiences the story of someone who served in the Armed Forces who holds special meaning to you. Share who you will be remembering this Memorial Day on social media using hashtag #VirtualMemorialDay.

And let’s not forget that Friday is National Poppy Day. While our poppy distribution plans may be different this year, it’s also an opportunity to innovate. The American Legion Auxiliary National Headquarters is planning a Facebook watch party May 22 at noon EDT. American Legion Family members across the country are also planning other low-contact ways to remember the fallen and keep faith with the disabled through the symbol of our official flower, the red poppy.

No matter how we remember this year, the most important message we need to send is that we will never forget.
For God and country,

James W. “Bill” Oxford
National Commander

To the Sons of the American Legion Members- I trust this newsletter finds each of you and your families safe and well.  Please let us know if you or if you know other members of the legion who are sick or have been impacted by the corona virus.

The Sons like all of the American Legion Family are looking forward to the day we can re-open our legion safely for all of our members.  Needless to say we all living in a “new world” of safety and regulatory concerns.  The legion is monitoring the situation concerning re-opening, and will re-open when it feels we can open to post to all activities and it will be safe for all parties.

We will be submitting our officers next to Dept. in the coming days. Currently I still have open the office of Jr. Vice and Historian vacant for the coming year.  If you have an interest in serving as an office please let me know soon.

The Sons of the American Legion at Post 29 is also trying to close out membership for 2020.  We are about 20 members short of our goal, so if you have not renewed, please do so and if you have potential new members let us know!  We truly want to be the largest post in the state again this year.

While we watch our grass grow and clean out our garages during this down time please continue to be safe and well and let us know how you are doing.  Please feel to free to contact me if the Sons of the American Legion Post 29 can be of service to you.

Thanks

Tom Bell

Updated House Rules

Due to changes to The American Legion Constitution, and the Department of Georgia Constitution, our Judge Advocate is currently revising the Constitution and Bylaws of Horace Orr Post 29, Inc. In addition, the policies and procedures of the Post have also been reviewed. The Constitution and Bylaws of Horace Orr Post 29, Inc. stipulate that rules and policies pertaining to the day to day operation of the Post are specifically assigned to the Executive Committee.

At the Executive Committee meeting on February 27, 2020, the House Rules and several other policies were reviewed, revised, and approved by the Executive Committee. The updated rules and policies are posted in the Social Quarters, and are filed in a notebook kept in the podium that also houses our Guest Log. A copy will be provided to the leader of each Legion Unit attached to this post. This announcement will be sent to all subscribers of our E-blast, posted on our website, and included in the next newsletter.

Any questions should be directed to the Executive Committee.

SAL Monthly Meeting 2.25.2020

The SAL is holding its general meeting on Tues. Feb 25th at  6:30pm after the Queen of Hearts.  We will be meeting upstairs in the small hall.  This will be an important meeting to discuss potential activities, establish a budget and to discuss charitable giving.    We were the largest post in the State last year, and we would like to continue this rise in membership by also becoming a better post in doing so.  Your Commander and E-Board need your support as we plan,  implement activities and participate in legion activities.  We need your input into these things- so please try to participate and attend our meetings.

See you Tues. Night!
