Service Dogs Available

There are many good organizations that train and provide service dogs to veterans, children with development issues, and others.

One such organization is Pawsitive Action Foundation, Inc., in Cherry Log, GA. This is not an endorsement, only a public service notice.

Due to COVID19, PAF is are experiencing low demand for dogs. As a result, they have plenty of dogs available for qualified beneficiaries.

Happy Trails Ol’ Roy

Our esteemed Chaplain, Roy Lantz, has packed his saddle bags and is riding off into the sunset. We appreciate his many years of service to the Legion, including two stints as our Chaplain.

Please join me in wishing Roy “Happy Trails” in his new life in Florida. Thanks for all you have done for veterans Roy! We won’t miss your corny jokes, but we will miss you.

We welcome Jim Wood, a young whipper-snapper with a wry grin and an awesome surname, as our new Chaplain. Please support Jim as he carries out his valuable duties.

Honoring First Responders

American Legion Post 29 – Makes awards to our first responders and Honors one of our own!  

At Horace Orr Post 29 of The American Legion’s regular monthly meeting on Nov. 5th  the Legion and the Golf Committee presented $29,500 to our first responders from the proceeds of the 24th Annual Golf Tournament that was held on Sept. 14th at Dogwood Country Club.  This year’s presentation marked the largest amount of monies ever given from the proceeds of this event.  We had the largest field of golfers we have ever had and Dogwood Country Club did an outstanding job in hosting the tournament.  

The legion was blessed to have great sponsors again this year and they helped us tremendously in making this event successful.  We would like to thank Chick- fil-la , Coca-Cola United,  Vingenzo’s , East Cobb Ace Hardware, Capstone Insurance, Steve’s Automotive and our title sponsor,  The Army National Guard for their support in making this event the best golf tournament we have had.  We also would like to thank you the members of the American Legion Post 29 for your participation and support.   

Each of the First Responders, the Marietta Police Dept., the Marietta Fire Dept., and the Cobb County Sheriff’s Dept. each received $6,500 each to go toward their Christmas and youth programs.   Another $10,000 grant was given to the WellStar Foundation in honor of one of our own- Uncle Pete Bagley!  Uncle Pete is a legend in our legion for the service he has given, but he is also a  long time leader in the Kennestone Hospital Volunteers that has been huge supporters of the legion and the Veterans Memorial 5k race.  This award is richly deserved and we all congratulate  Uncle Pete Bagley.   The WellStar Foundation will use these monies to decorate a room especially for EMT’s in the new Emergency Room at the Kennestone-WellStar Hospital.   Going forward this award in honor of Uncle Pete will be given annually  from the proceeds of the golf tournament. 

The legion would also like to thank the golf committee under the direction of Allen Rosenfield and Commander Walt Cusick for putting on such a wonderful and successful event.  Also a special thanks go to committee members Ken Buechel, Jim Kopp, Guy Cook, Russell Dixon, Tom Bell,  and Teresa Myer for her great crew in social quarters all of their hard work on this event.    

A great time was had by all – and the golf committee – looks forward to hosting another successful 25th Annual Golf Tournament next Sept. 2020!

Honoring Past Commanders

Prior to Veterans Day 2020 American Legion grave markers/flag holders were placed on the local graves of Past Commanders of Post 29 Marietta. Past Commander Bill Beaudin led this effort.

These grave marker/flag holders and American flags recognize veterans who served as Commander over the last 100 years.

Membership Drive 11.17.2020

I am sending out this invitation to our members who have not yet renewed.

Representatives from the Legion, SAL, and Auxiliary will be on hand in the Social Quarters to help you renew your membership in person. Visit us on Tuesday November 17th from 4-6:30PM.

You can also renew online through Legion.com, through our website, from forms available in the Social Quarters that can be processed by the bartenders, or through mailing your renewal in to the Post.

The Social Quarters will still be available to process renewals as before. There will be some forms available in the social quarters to fill out to accompany your dues. The bartenders have been asked to not process renewals if the form is not filled out in its entirety. For any questions or concerns in filling this form out, please contact George Grindstaff and do not take the bartenders time with these matters. With the new guidelines the bartenders have to follow we do not want to add to their growing list of duties.

We look forward to getting your renewals processed just as easily and quickly as before…and hopefully even better. Contact us with any membership questions you may have.
